Did you know about that when the explorers founded São Paulo people, started moving to the interior of Brazil? But, how did it all start? That would be a nice question to find out, right? The culture element I am studying, Migration, was really common in the 1700's as explorers moved into Brazil. To let you know the real meaning of migration, I will tell you other things about Brazil. When you migrate you have to move only from one place to another place in a country. I am gong to talk about
the European and African immigrants and the people from the northeast.
Africans and Portuguese came to Brazil mostly from 1650-1930. Why and where did the people from the Northeast move? The
people in the Northeast came from the African slaves that the Portuguese
brought to Brazil. It all started when
the Portuguese started taking over Brazil, they made large farms and
gigantic houses. They needed someone to work for them so they cruelly
kidnapped the Africans from Angola and other countries in Africa. They
would bring them to Brazil and make them work for them. If they did
something wrong their bosses would hit them with whips. They would sell
them and buy them. They would bring millions and millions of Africans to
Brazil which was the cause of the poor people that moved from the Northeast. The rich ones just continued being rich and live in
houses and apartment building all over Brazil, mostly in São Paulo and
Rio de Janeiro. In 1930, their children didn’t have much money to live. So they moved to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or other big cities looking for new homes and new opportunities. They would always stay on the road asking for a ride, or just continue walking the rest of the way, that must have been really difficult!!! Those people would get very tired, but they could make it. Some now live in favelas. Favelas are neighborhoods that are made without permission from the government, what a shame! Some of the children go to the streets to beg for food and money, and their parents would go to work, mostly they get very little money from their boss, but they won't stop working! I guess you’d like to know about the Portuguese. Here are some fun facts!!! A lot of Portuguese moved to Brazil, 55.3% lived in São Paulo, 12.3% lived in Rio de Janeiro, 7.6% lived in Minas Gerais, 7.3% lived in Rio Grande do Sul, 4.5% lived in Paraná, 3% lived in Santa Catarina and 2.2% lived in Pernambuco. About 1,360,517 Portuguese came to Brazil from 1500 to 1930. I thought it would be much more! Impressive! So, did you like Brazil’s story of migration and immigration? I really enjoyed it. I hope you liked it! If you would like to know more check the rest of the web site. It has a lot more of information about Brazil. __GMP
