How come you can’t have pride in your new shirt? Stay tuned and you will soon find out! Nationalism tells how people have pride in their country. It is how people show their feelings, love and pride for where they live or lived. You still don’t get what nationalism is, do you? Here let me explain a bit more.

When you have nationalism, you care and feel for your country, just like you would care for your best friend, maybe even a little more. For instance, an organization is a group that knows everything about their group and why they are doing what they are doing. A nation is a bigger group. A government makes laws and rules to keep the country safe and organized. When you have these two groups, it is easy to have nationalism because they help keep the country from becoming a laughing land!

Another way that people can have or show nationalism is with their ethnicity. Ethnicity is a way of thinking about a group of people, but in a small way. When you have nationalism it is almost ethnicity, but it is a bigger way of thinking and feeling about a large group of people in a country. Now I know that you understand nationalism.

Brazilians started to feel a lot of pride when they were set free in 1822. That was the day they won independence from Portugal and gained their freedom. Now, they did not have to do what Portugal said. They did not have to pay taxes! Nationalism also began to take over when Brazil started to have a ton of different types of people from everywhere. Some Brazilians believed that if it were not for the other people who moved into Brazil, Brazil would have never been able to develop. Because there are so many different races, it is one of many strengths Brazil has. For example, in 1872, population of 2.5 million was made up of native Indians, African salves, and Portuguese Colonists. Then the numbers grew even more in 1888 when slavery was no longer alive. People from Spain, Germany, and Portugal began to share the land every body now loved. Next, in 1890, millions of Italians started to move into the south and southeast of Brazil. Because of all the different types of people Brazil began to get proud or you could call it…. NATIONALISM!

Brazilians took pride in where they lived because it was a feeling of “I was there and saw every one come.” It was also a sense of ethnicity. That was also the way so many people had pride, took care of others and shared! That is what nationalism is!
